The Pantheon, one of the most iconic buildings of Rome, is actually still quite mysterious….

The edifice, as we can see it now is, actually, the third structure, rebuilt on the same spot, over 150 years, between 25 BC and 125 AD.

As not anymore the original Pantheon built by Marcus Agrippa, general of Augustus, does the actual building reproduce the shape and the orientation of the previous ones? What was the Pantheon used for? Was it a temple or was it used for purpose other than the worship?

This seminar aims to respond to these questions, at the light of the most recent researches, as well as to better comprehend its extraordinary architecture.

We will investigate the change in the use of the building through the centuries and its legendary fame among the artists. Michelangelo himself, visiting it, proclaimed it of “angelic and not human design.”

The legacy of the Pantheon is quite evident in many buildings across the continents: from the Elks National Memorial in Chicago to the Pantheon of Paris, from the Columbia University's Low Memorial Library, the Killian Court Dome at MIT , to the University of Virginia Rotunda.
