Rome started as a village of huts on the Palatine hill to become the most powerful metropolis in the western world. The hill remained a place where the aristocrats wanted to live to become, in the Imperial Age the seat of the palace of the emperors hence the new political hearth of the ancient city which, throughout the Roman Republican Time, was at the bottom of the hill, in the Roman Forum.
Started as a gathering place and a market, as Rome grew up in size, the Forum became the political, business, and religious heart of the city: the talk will focus on its most significant buildings, their evolution over time and the role they played on the political stage. Fundamental, for the imperial propaganda, was the largest amphitheater ever built, better known with its nickname, the Colosseum. An icon of Rome, it truly embodied the dominance and the power of Rome.
Led by an expert on ancient Roman Topography, Livia Galante, this Conversation will focus on the central archaeological area of Rome. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased comprehension on the history and the monuments of one of the most important archaeological areas in the world.
The lecture lasts 45 minutes with 15 minutes of Q&A at the end!
