The niece of cardinal Mazzarino, inappropriate lover of Luis XIV of France, then wife to the powerful Roman prince Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, Maria Mancini, aged 22, arrived in the papal city in 1661 transforming the Roman scene through her refined French taste, scandalous fashion, and famous masquerades.
While she was associated with Venus, the ancient Queen Artemisia, or the sorceress Armida, Maria was in fact far from frivolous or whimsical in her choices even when she flouted all social conventions and eventually abandoned her husband, princely household, and stifling entourage.
This talk explores Maria Mancinis’ contributions as patron of the arts and reassesses her role as a revolutionary woman in the seventeenth century.

Course Curriculum
Alexandra Massini
was raised in Italy and Germany, before moving to the U.K. where she studied History of Art. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Warwick, B.A. and M.A. degrees with Double Distinction from the Courtauld Institute of Art, as well as a Diploma from the Study Centre for the History of the Fine and Decorative Arts.
Currently Alexandra is the Academic Director of CEA Study Abroad in Rome, where she also teaches History of Art. Aside of her academic activity she works as author, consultant, and speaker for documentaries on art and history, collaborates with the Colonna and Doria Pamphilj galleries, and Villa Albani in Rome, and curates the Art Collection of the Rome Cavalieri Hotel (Waldorf-Astoria).
As a licensed guide she conducts specialized visits for collectors, museum curators and directors, ambassadors, and governmental officials, and organizes conferences and cultural programs for international universities, investor groups and institutional events such as the recent G20 in Rome. In the past she has acted as study leader for the World Monuments Fund and the National Trust USA, has worked for the Thyssen Museum in Madrid and Sotheby’s Auctioneers in Rome, has written for Blue Guides, and has published her own guidebook to Rome.
