Known as the “City of Popes”, it played a pivotal role in shaping the spiritual and political life of medieval Europe. In this talk, we’ll journey through the heart of Anagni, beginning with the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria—a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture that has watched over the city for nearly a millennium. Beneath it lies the breathtaking Crypt of Saint Magnus, a spiritual and artistic treasure often called the “Sistine Chapel of the Middle Ages” for its remarkably preserved frescoes that still astonish visitors today. From there, we step into the world of high drama at the Papal Palace, where one of the most infamous confrontations of the Middle Ages unfolded: the clash between Pope Boniface VIII and the emissaries of King Philip IV of France. A setting of power and intrigue, the palace still echoes the struggles that once determined the fate of nations.
